We Take Responsibility

Sustainability is one of our most important priorities.

To overview

Photovoltaics have a central role in sustainable electricity supply.  Every photovoltaic system that is installed contributes to replacing fossil fuels and reducing the carbon footprint.

Our Commitment

In 2020, we adopted the Sustainability Framework 2025 to expand our existing sustainability commitment from "100% carbon offset" to "beyond carbon".

The Sustainability Framework therefore emphasizes and encourages employee-driven sustainability initiatives and projects that support social, economic and environmental goals.

Our sustainability framework

The 2025 Sustainability Framework is inspired by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs, which were developed by the United Nations General Assembly. From these UN goals, we have chosen to prioritize ten goals that will help us guide our internal sustainability efforts and in turn contribute to the broader UN goals.

The sustainable development objectives we have prioritised

Beyond coal

We recognise that sustainability is a holistic endeavour and that we still have a long way to go in terms of real ownership. Our aim is to go "beyond carbon" and focus on a broad and sustainable spectrum for society, the economy and the environment.

Following the selection of sustainable development goals, we set up working groups of employees from all over the world. The primary objectives that contribute directly to the Sustainability Framework are: "Promote diversity, equality and inclusion", "Promote sustainability in our supply chains" and "Enhance the uptake of renewable energy projects". Our working groups are already working towards achieving these objectives.

Another initiative is our lecture series on sustainability. This series of internal events was created to give our employees the opportunity to listen and talk to leading scientists, activists or policy makers on issues related to various aspects of sustainability. Our first speaker was Professor Rex, head of the MOSAIC expedition to the Arctic, who shared with us the first results of the expedition and his urgent call for immediate action on climate change.

We will continue to build and evolve our approach to sustainability in the coming years. The road we are on has no end, but it is a way of thinking and acting that will continually evolve and help shape our business.

We welcome your interest in working together for change. If you have questions, comments or would like to learn more about how we are working towards these goals, please contact us.

We are part of the BayWa Group

...and its commitment to sustainability

The BayWa Group implemented a Group-wide climate strategy in 2019, which outlines ambitious commitments and targets.

BayWa's climate strategy is guided by the Paris Agreement to tackle global warming. An important foundation for our work is the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPPC) Special Report "Global Warming of 1.5°C", which calls for immediate action to mitigate climate change, a commitment to limiting carbon emissions, which will lead our Earth's future in a better direction.

As part of its commitment to achieving clear and tangible sustainability targets, the BayWa Group has joined RE100. RE100 is a group of companies that have publicly committed to using 100% renewable energy sources in the coming decades.

In its second year of participation, BayWa AG received a B rating from the CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) and is above the European and industry average.

In 2020, BayWa was named by the United Nations and Bloomberg as one of the "50 sustainability and climate leaders". The film released for this purpose shows how BayWa, as a traditional conglomerate, advances the agriculture, energy and building materials sectors through sustainable innovations.

Our achievements on the climate strategy targets

With our business models and our expertise in the field of renewable energy at BayWa r.e., we pursue sustainability and contribute to the group-wide corporate goals of BayWa AG.

Reducing greenhouse gases is a top priority for us. Therefore, emission reduction opportunities are identified on a regular basis and reduction projects are continuously implemented. BayWa r.e. is procuring 100% green electricity from 2020 and energy efficiency is integrated into the Sustainability Framework 2025.

BayWa's climate strategy

Our footprint

As part of the BayWa Group, we publish our sustainability data, such as energy consumption and other CO2 emissions, through the annual sustainability report of BayWa AG since 2015.

The BayWa Sustainability Report is prepared in accordance with the standards of the internationally recognised Global Reporting Initiative and is subject to an external independent audit

  • Report

To date, our report includes all direct emissions from our sites, facilities and vehicle fleets (scope 1) and indirect emissions such as electricity, heating and cooling consumption (scope 2), as well as emissions from our travel (scope 3.6). We are currently expanding the scope of our report to include more scope 3 categories.

  • Reduction

Based on the data collected, we identify areas where we can significantly reduce our carbon footprint and define concrete measures to increase energy efficiency and thus reduce emissions. Measures already in place include the use of LEDs in our offices and warehouses, the transition to providing 100% green electricity in 2020 and the continued transition to an electric vehicle fleet.
